Giving away something free in return for a subscription is nothing new, but we still do it because it still works. A freebie serves as an enticement, showcases you a provider of value and if you mix it with conversion strategies – it builds your customer list too.

You might give away:

  • Ecourse – Create a series of message on a specific topic.
  • Software – Hire a developer to make some simple, but useful software for your market.
  • A Practical Tool – Perhaps a handy spreadsheet, worksheet, pattern, etc.
  • Audio – A recording or live teleseminar invitation.
  • Video – Whether it’s instructional, informative or entertaining, it doesn’t matter. As long as your market is interested in it.

Of course, it’s all fine and dandy to have a great freebie for your autoresponder – you still have to sell it.

How to Sell Your Autoresponder

Think of your freebie and autoresponder as a product. Even though it’s free, you’ve still got to sell it and make your visitor want to leave their name and email address. Plus, you’ve got to make it so enticing, they’re going to want to open the emails you’re going to start sending to them.

To get started selling, make use of these selling tools:

  • An opt-in box on every page: Include a quick attention-getting headline, a compelling reason to subscribe and the sign up box. Don’t force your readers to click around to find the sign up. Make it easy for them to find on every single page.
  • An opt-in page: Create a page that’s fully dedicated to showing the benefits of signing up. This is where you’ll send traffic from your advertising, articles, etc.
  • Picture of your freebie: Make a report cover, software box, etc. Having a graphical representation can make your offer more tangible and attractive to your reader.

What to Include on your Opt-In Page:

  • An attention-getting, benefit driven headline. Get to the heart of the manner. If you’re reader has pain or desire – show them how your offer can help them with that.
  • A compelling description and benefits of your freebie AND being on your mailing list. You can focus solely on promoting your freebie, but if they see the benefits of the subscription, they will be more likely to open the emails you send them.
  • Graphic of your freebie and/or newsletter. This will help draw the eye in to your offer and a sharp graphics increases the perceived value of your offer.
  • Full instructions on how to sign up. Spell it out for them, so there’s no confusion and let’s face it, when you guide people on what they should do, they are more likely to do it. Tell them: “Enter your first name and email address, then click ‘Sign me Up'”
  • A spam statement. People are concerned about spam and may hesitate to give out their email address. Include a brief statement about what you do / don’t do with your readers’ personal information.

Now, You’re Ready to Promote:

Now that you’ve got everything in place, it’s time to spread the word. A key to getting the best conversions on sign up is to send people to your opt-in page. It is a page solely based on getting the subscription and will serve you best every time. A visitor to your site is just a visitor, but if you can turn them into a subscriber…you are then more likely to turn them into a customer. The good news is, even though you still have to sell your freebie/autoresponder, it’s still an easier sell than a product!

Include links to your opt-in page in the following places:

  • Your bylines – Promote your freebie in your articles, blog posts, guest blog posts, etc.
  • Your navigation – Add a link to your website navigation that says “Free Action Guide” or whatever fits your unique freebie.
  • Your videos – Tell your viewers where to sign up and include a water mark on your video with the link.
  • Your signature – Whether it’s email or a forum, tell people about your freebie.
  • Co-promotion – Share other people’s freebies, in return for them promoting yours.
  • Be a podcast guest – Look for on-target and popular podcasts and share your opt-in page in your interview.
  • Write a press release – A valuable freebie is certainly newsworthy. Write a release and distribute it.

The key is persistence because as you build more and more links coming to your opt-in page, the more you’ll continue to grow on a regular basis. Don’t think a few articles and a guest spot on a little podcast will do it. Your list is your bread and butter…make it your focus.

No doubt that email marketing is an effective marketing tool, but the big question is, “What should I email to my list?”

It doesn’t matter what niche you’re in, there is always plenty to share with your list. Never let writer’s block keep you from using something as valuable as your mailing list.

  1. Make a list of major topics relevant to your target market. Break these down into sub-categories and ultimately into specific topics. Always keep this list handy as it will be great for generating ideas.
  2. Keep a notebook or your smartphone handy for recording ideas that come to you spontaneously. We’ve all been at the grocery store or in the middle of a workout when a great idea comes to us. Make sure you have a way to record them or those ideas will soon be lost.
  3. If you are in your own target market (ex. your target is Dungeons and Dragons players and you play D&D), make a list of products that you like and use. You can even make a list of products that you don’t care too much for. These lists will give you plenty of ideas of products to promote and educate your readers about.
  4. Make a list of the most popular products for your target market and that will give you a nice list of products to promote. For example, if you sell consumer products, just go to Amazon.com, click on the appropriate sub-category and near the top of the page, you’ll find a link for bestsellers.
  5. Write case studies. If your clients/customers are doing well, make an informative case study out of them. You can interview them, write a report of their results, etc. Just make sure it’s interesting to your readers.
  6. Ask your readers to submit questions and answer them. Don’t have a huge list and can’t seem to get many questions? Visit topic-related forums and networking groups and see what questions they’re asking each other.
  7. Do some keyword research. Look for the information or products your target market is actively searching for by using a tool like WordTracker.com or the free Google keyword planner.
  8. Make a video and send it to your list. Make it an informative talk from you, do a screen capture video or just have a little fun. As long as it’s entertaining or useful to your readers, they’ll appreciate it.
  9. Make an audio recording and send it to your list. You can teach something, do an interview or anything your readers want.
  10. Write a blog entry and send it to your list. Not only do they receive good content, but you can add some interactivity to your communication by having them leave comments.
  11. Send a link to your article on another site. If it’s useful to your reader, send them a quick and interest-generating description, plus a link to read it online.

  20. Make a top 5 or a top 10 list. When you aren’t sure what to write about, just make a list. For example, “Top 10 Ways to Save Money on Your Heating Bill” or “Top 5 Ways Increase the Speed of Your Cross-Stitching.”
  21. Create “How to” instructions or some type of tutorial. You can send the instructions via email or if illustrations/screenshots will enhance the tutorial, give them a link to a tutorial you’ve posted online.

There are a whole slew of strategies you can use with newsletters. There isn’t one cookie-cutter mold. Like many things in business, it’s a matter of knowing your options and choosing the one that’s right for your business.

These are four of the most common types of content newsletters. They’re all effective in their own way; with the main difference being time. Amazon is playing a ten-year strategy, while most affiliates play a three-month strategy. One isn’t better than the other, they’re just different business models.

Without further ado, here are the four types.

The Branding Focused Newsletter

Sites like Amazon.com, Woot.com and Facebook.com are not here to make a quick buck. They’re here to build a lasting brand.

Their goal is that the next time you think of buying a laptop, you think of Amazon.com before you think of Dell.com. For them, keeping up a consistent image is much, much more important than making a sale today.

HTML has many drawbacks. Images don’t display on certain email readers and internet connections. There’s no way to make sure everyone sees things the same way. But sites like Amazon simply can’t afford to send text emails – It’s against their brand.

The branding-centric strategy is very effective with the right companies. These are companies going for the big bucks, that want to build their brand rather than instant revenues.

The “Burn the List” Strategy

This is the complete opposite of the branding strategy. This strategy basically says “to hell with the list, give me sales now.”

How does it work? The moment someone signs up, they’re essentially bombarded with sales messages until they either buy or unsubscribe.

This can be very effective for some marketers. It’s a common technique among co-registration buyers and short term affiliate marketers. If you’re spending $.50 cents per email and can get 2% of subscribers to buy a $50 product by bombarding them with sales messages, you’re doubling your money.

This is a very short time horizon strategy, with the aim to make as much money as possible immediately.

The Relationship-Focused Strategy

This strategy is something of an in-between. The goal isn’t to establish a brand, but to build a personable relationship with the list. Authors of these tend to think in 6 months to 3 years, rather than ten years or a few weeks.

People using the relationship focused strategy aren’t aiming to make one sale now, but many sales over the course of weeks and months. They’re focused on the back end.

This strategy is very, very profitable as far as internet marketing goes. Not only do you generate many long term sales, but you also build your brand in a marketplace. You build a lot of goodwill towards your name, that can later be converted into speaking engagements, JV deals and other favors.

The “Link To” Newsletter

This newsletter is an interesting hybrid of the relationship builder and the burn-the-list strategy.

Essentially, the newsletter doesn’t contain very much content in and of itself. The whole newsletter may just be 100 to 200 words. Instead, the newsletter sells the readers on clicking on a link to see more content.

In that content, there’s either AdSense ads or promotions for affiliate programs. Often times there actually is unique content when they click through, but they have to click through to see it. That way, the publisher ensures he gets paid.

This strategy is a great interim strategy for increasing earnings from an affiliate site or AdSense site. If you have an AdSense site earning $200 a month, you may very well turn that into $400 a month by turning one-time visitors into recurring visitors. Do that by collecting their email address.

The 90-10 Rule

The 90-10 rule basically works like this: 90% of what you send should be content and 10% should be sales.

If you bombard your newsletter with offers, people will either unsubscribe or just get used to not reading your content.

On the other hand, if they know that any time they open your emails they can expect high quality content, they’ll get used to opening your emails.

There are two ways to adhere to the 90-10 rule.

Method #1 is to send high quality content emails and include a brief offer on the bottom of each email or every other email. This works great for many marketers.

Method #2 is to send high quality content consistently with no sales pitch. You build up credibility in your user’s eyes. Then, every once in a while, maybe only once every couple months or so, you do a hardcore marketing push.

Because you’ve built up your credibility, they’ll still open and read your emails. They’ll not only read your sales emails, but they won’t get turned off, as they know that you don’t make it a habit to pitch them.

The Importance of Consistency

You need to give your users the chance to get used to your mailing schedule. Pick a frequency of mailing and don’t deviate from it.

People often ask “How often should I mail my list?” The answer is: As often as you want, so long as you’re consistent.

Some emails are monthly emails. People know and expect these emails once a month. For example, in the financial sector, many analysts publish newsletters with market predictions once a month. They’re very successful, because people know what to expect.

On the other hand, some newsletters are daily. For example, daily horoscopes do very well, because people know and expect it every day. They open their horoscope which takes 2 minutes every morning, like clockwork.

It doesn’t matter how often you want to mail, so long as your readers know how often you’re going to mail them and they get used to the consistency. Pick a frequency, let them know how often you’ll mail them and don’t deviate.

If you just add these two things, your newsletter will have a great chance at becoming a newsletter that others love to read. Make sure your users know how often to expect your newsletters, stick to your mailing schedule, have at least 90% content and keep your quality at the A+ level.
