In a world and society where competition is fierce, the average attention span is less than 7 seconds… it is important if you are a coach, consultant, therapist, trainer, speaker, author, expert… to pull your pin play – you need to be able to convince, persuade, motivate, inspire.
Not only will you be better able to be efficient, reactive, different… but in addition you will be able to differentiate yourself through finesse, with class and elegance once you have perfectly mastered the main principles of influence and persuasion.
You will facilitate the choice, decision-making and satisfaction of your customers (prospects, members, patients, partners, ambassadors, etc.). As a reminder, the first vocation of the entrepreneur is to develop his activity and to do this they must sell, and to sell they must convince.
The one who does not manage to convince will not be able to sell (as a reminder, the sale is neither good nor bad it is a tool and an amplifier of what you already are) and will not be able to develop any lasting activity.
You will also be able to recognize and avoid the traps of manipulators. In short, the advantages and benefits of influence are numerous. We will cover some of the reasons why influence is so important in this article.
What is Influence?
If you look at the definition in the dictionary you will find:
“Action, generally exerts a regular and continuous object or thing element or a person on an item or another person”.
Often we cite as examples of influence things like TV, social networks, nature, politics and so on. However, we believe that influence goes far beyond these things – you could say that it is everywhere where there is communication.
Who initiates communication relays a message, who says this message has influence.
The parent who talks with their child, the teacher with their student, the painting displayed in the art gallery, the toothpaste label, the film, the logo, etc. So, whether we like it or not, we influence and we are influenced. Hence the importance of understanding and identifying the main mechanisms, right?
As an expert, entrepreneur, coach, consultant, therapist, trainer, speaker… you communicate suddenly, you influence (and you necessarily seek to influence) in particular to help more people, develop your business, have more impact. This is why it is interesting to master (or refresh your memory) about the key principles of influence.
Using Influence as a Tool
Very often, when we talk about influence (especially with beginners to the subject), it quickly becomes a question of manipulation in their mind. Influence can certainly be used for manipulation but we would never recommend that.
See influence as a tool or even an amplifier. It’s like money or a knife or… it’s how you use it that will impact the result. A knife can cut tomatoes and it can also be used for harm. Using influence in an open and honest way is a far better solution for long term results.
People use influence and persuasion everyday to sell products, sway people to their way of thinking, help their children, negotiate deals and so on. It is a very powerful tool and you need to use it in the right way.
