Reddit is an online community that was started in 2006 by college student Modestly professor Yishai Schuller. He had learned about a new way to make money from home, so he set up this website as a forum where people can come and share their knowledge and contribute to the global economy. People can post links and ads on the side bar of the site and vote on the ones they like best. They can create polls and ask questions for other users.
The moderators of the site are known as “redditors” or “moderators”. Every week, redditors up votes or down votes a post if it meets the requirements of the community. If the post receives enough “down votes” it will be removed from the front page and those who want to post the content will need to find a new forum. On the day of the submission, a small flair box will appear above the up vote/down vote button, and a new post will appear with the title “Reddited”.
The process of getting your post approved on the front page can be complicated, especially if you don’t know how karma works. On Reddit, karma is the difference between a post being approved and not being approved. Everyone starts out with zero karma and the more karma that you have, the more influence you have in the voting process. If you have lots of good Karma, it takes a lot of effort to get your post approved, but if you have lots of bad Karma it’s very easy to knock your karma down to zero.
On most forums, including those on Reddit, Karma is determined by how many up votes a post receives. This is why it’s so hard to come across information on how to manipulate karma in the Reddit forum. Because of this, there aren’t any “front page” posts in the reddiquette anymore and all links and ads are tracked by Karma instead of having the front page flair.
One way around this is to submit your post to /r/reddit or a related sub-redditor. These kinds of submission work better for higher posts. You’ll get no vote or down vote, just your comment accepted. There are still some marketers on Reddit using bots to obtain free front page upvoting, but those techniques are no longer popular with editors (most of whom prefer to post original content). The only way to really manipulate Reddit so that your post is approved is to use the right kind of comments.
On the whole, it’s pretty clear that we are at the beginning of an exciting new era in online community building. We may never know what the future of internet marketing will look like, but redditors are definitely taking full advantage of the easy submission and updating possibilities currently available on reddiquette. While we are still seeing some major changes to reddiquette on a day-to-day basis, the ability to quickly post and update a post makes it one of the best methods for gaining easy access and influencing conversation on the most important website on the world wide web. If you haven’t started using it, I would urge you to do so.
